Spartanburg, South Carolina

Spartanburg is the Upstate's other anchor city, about half an hour up I-85 from Greenville. Known as the Hub City for its railroad history, it has a revitalized downtown centered on Morgan Square, with restaurants, coffee shops, and a steady calendar of events.

Wofford College and Converse University give the city a college-town current, and the county's manufacturing base, including the BMW plant off I-85, keeps the area growing. Neighborhoods range from historic districts near downtown to newer communities on the city's edges.

Around Spartanburg

Outdoor life is closer than the mill-town reputation lets on. Croft State Park spreads across 7,000 acres of former Army training ground on the city's southeast side, with mountain-bike and equestrian trails and fishing on Lake Craig, while the Mary Black Rail Trail — part of the Daniel Morgan Trail System — links neighborhoods to downtown. Duncan Park holds one more surprise: a wooden-grandstand ballpark from 1926, the oldest in South Carolina.

Converse Heights and Hampton Heights are the names to know for early-1900s houses on sidewalk streets, both within easy reach of downtown. Beyond the neighborhoods, USC Upstate anchors the city's north side, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System ranks among the area's largest employers, and every spring the city closes its downtown streets for Spring Fling, a festival that has been running for decades.
