Duncan, South Carolina

Middle Tyger convenience roughly midway between Greenville and Spartanburg.

Duncan sits at the heart of Spartanburg County's Middle Tyger area, right off I-85 roughly midway between Greenville and Spartanburg. What was once a small railroad-and-mill community has grown into a busy residential corridor with new subdivisions and everyday shopping along Highway 290.

Quick access to GSP International Airport and the BMW plant in Greer makes it popular with commuters, while Tyger River Park — a large county baseball and softball complex — is a local hub on spring weekends. It's a practical home base for anyone whose life stretches across both ends of the Upstate.

Getting around

Sits right off I-85 roughly midway between Greenville and Spartanburg, with either downtown about 20-25 minutes away.

Around Duncan

Duncan started as a land bet that paid off. Leroy Duncan bought property in 1874 where the new Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway crossed Gap Creek Road, and the town that grew at that crossing was chartered under his name in 1890. The history still shows in the housing stock: modest early-1900s houses on the short streets near the old depot grid, with each later decade's neighborhoods rippling outward from there.

Duncan also holds one of the county's working institutions: Spartanburg Community College's Tyger River Campus, on Highway 290 at the east end of town. It trains workers for the manufacturers along I-85 and houses the Spark Center, a facility for companies starting up or relocating to the area. For residents, that means degree programs, certificates, and workforce classes a few minutes from home instead of a drive across the county.
