Moore, South Carolina

Country roads and newer neighborhoods on Spartanburg's southwest side.

Moore is an unincorporated community in southwest Spartanburg County, where farmland and wooded backroads meet newer subdivisions off US-221 and Anderson Mill Road. There's no traditional downtown here — the draw is space, quieter streets, and room to spread out.

Spartanburg's west-side shopping and dining is a short drive away, and I-26 connects to I-85 for commutes toward Greenville. It's popular with buyers who want a country feel while staying close to city conveniences.

Around Moore

The road most residents drive daily is named for a real mill. Anderson's Mill still stands where Anderson Mill Road crosses the North Tyger River — a water-powered gristmill named for James "Tyger Jim" Anderson, who acquired it in 1831, on a site whose history reaches back to the late 1700s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, it is among the oldest mill buildings in South Carolina still on its original foundation.

Physically, Moore is a patchwork rather than a single place. Brick ranches and farmhouses sit on multi-acre lots along the through roads, while newer subdivisions gather toward Reidville Road (SC-296), where Spartanburg's west-side retail is closest. The North Tyger River crosses the northern edge of the community on its way to meet the county's other Tyger branches, and the gently rolling land between the creeks is why so many newer streets here still back up to woods or pasture.
