Woodruff, South Carolina

Woodruff is a small town in southern Spartanburg County with a walkable Main Street lined by brick storefronts. Its roots go back to the textile era, and the town has held onto a friendly, everybody-knows-everybody feel.

Sitting where several state highways cross, Woodruff puts both Spartanburg and Greenville within a reasonable drive, and new investment has been arriving in this part of the county. That combination is drawing buyers who want small-town living without giving up access to the Upstate's job centers.

Around Woodruff

Woodruff is named for Thomas Woodruff, who ran a stagecoach stop here in the early 1800s, and the town spent its first century as the market center for the surrounding cotton and peach farms before the mills arrived around 1900. That history still shows at the edges of town, where the streets give way quickly to open fields and pastureland.

Each spring, downtown hosts the Stone Soup Storytelling Festival, South Carolina's official storytelling festival, which has been bringing tellers and audiences to town since the late 1980s. About twenty minutes south, Musgrove Mill State Historic Site preserves a Revolutionary War battlefield on the Enoree River, with walking trails, a waterfall, and a kayak launch — the kind of quiet history-and-outdoors outing that suits the pace of life here.
