Western Upstate MLS
Central, South Carolina
A small rail-heritage town between Clemson and Easley.
Central got its name from the railroad — it sat roughly midway on the line between Atlanta and Charlotte — and it's still a small, unpretentious town at heart. Today it's home to Southern Wesleyan University and sits a short hop from Clemson along US-123.
Buyers here find a mix of older homes near the town center and newer construction serving the Clemson area's growth. It's a practical choice if you want to be near the university scene without living in the middle of it.
Known for
- Home to Southern Wesleyan University
- Railroad heritage and small-town roots
- Quick US-123 access to Clemson
Getting around
Just a few minutes to Clemson on US-123, and roughly 40 minutes to Greenville.
Around Central
The town leans into its railroad identity. The Central Railway Museum keeps the history, and the annual Central Railroad Festival fills downtown with live music, vendors, and caboose tours — the kind of event where you recognize half the crowd by your second year in town. The commercial block along the tracks still has its old brick storefronts, which gives the small downtown more character than drivers passing on US-123 would guess.
For a town this size, the transportation story is unusually strong. The Amtrak Crescent stops in Clemson, a few miles down the road, with service toward Atlanta in one direction and Charlotte, Washington, and New York in the other. Freight still rolls through Central on the old Atlanta-to-Charlotte main line — part of the town's character, and worth factoring in when you look at homes close to the tracks.
