Much of the town is a National Register historic district, and the buildings earn it. Farmers Society Hall, finished in 1828 for a farmers society organized in 1815, still anchors the Green — Thomas Green Clemson discussed his plans for a college with its members there. Two house museums from the same era, Woodburn and Ashtabula, sit just outside town and open for tours.

Each April the Spring Jubilee brings a juried arts and crafts show to the Green, a tradition now nearly fifty years old that draws crowds from across the region. Practical anchors sit close by as well: Tri-County Technical College's main campus is here in Pendleton, and the upper reaches of Lake Hartwell are a short drive away. Housing runs from period homes inside the historic district to newer neighborhoods along the routes toward Clemson and Anderson.
