Liberty is a railroad town at its root — a station on the new Atlanta-to-Charlotte line went up in 1873, the town was chartered three years later, and cotton mills arriving from 1901 made it a textile community for most of the twentieth century. How it got the name is genuinely unsettled; the favorite local story ties it to Revolutionary War celebrations at a nearby spring, which historians treat as legend.

Two highways cross downtown — SC-93, which links Easley on one side with Norris, Central, and Clemson on the other, and US-178, which runs up from Anderson and continues to Pickens. The city stages its own Spring Festival and Fall Festival each year, and the housing stock tracks the town's history: mill-era cottages near the center, brick ranches from the postwar decades, and homes on real acreage once the streets turn to county roads.
