How Gower Estates was built
Gower Estates takes its name from Ebenezer Gower, the coach and wagon manufacturer whose factory was a major Greenville employer in the 1800s. The neighborhood was laid out off Parkins Mill Road, between Laurens Road, Pleasantburg Drive, and Augusta Road, and built out from 1960 through the decade. It holds 267 homes, and it developed as a neighborhood of individual builders rather than one developer's plan, which is why the streets carry a variety of styles instead of a repeating floor plan.
The Gower Estates Pool opened in 1963 and remains the center of neighborhood life, with more than 400 member families and one of the larger summer swim teams in Greenville County. Membership is voluntary rather than an HOA obligation.
The homes in Gower Estates
The typical house is a mid century brick ranch or two story traditional on a lot of half an acre or more, set well back from the street under a canopy of hardwoods. Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods, and split levels fill in the mix, and many of the originals have been extensively updated with modern kitchens, expanded primary suites, and additions that keep the brick exterior. Sizes run from around 1,800 square feet to well over 4,000, with three to five bedrooms common.
Because so many homes have been owned for decades, turnover is low and renovated homes tend to sell fast. Curving streets, sidewalks on many blocks, and low traffic make it a neighborhood where people walk, and the neighborhood association hosts an oyster roast, a Fourth of July parade, and a holiday party each year.
Getting around from Gower Estates
Gower Estates Park sits alongside the neighborhood with lighted ballfields, tennis and pickleball courts, and a nine hole disc golf course. Cleveland Park, the Swamp Rabbit Trail, and Falls Park are a few minutes north, and the Augusta Road shops and restaurants are a short drive west. Laurens Road puts Verdae, the Woodruff Road corridor, and I-85 within ten minutes, and downtown Greenville is about the same.
