How Botany Woods was built
Botany Woods was developed by John Taylor in the late 1950s and early 1960s on land that had belonged to the Edwards family, whose name survives in Edwards Road along the neighborhood's edge. Taylor's plan set aside 41 acres of rolling ground for a golf course and commissioned George W. Cobb, the Greenville based architect who designed the Par 3 Course at Augusta National, to lay out a nine hole par 3 course. On November 9, 1965, residents formally incorporated the Botany Woods Country Club to run it. Tennis was added in 1971 and the club became the Carolina Golf and Tennis Club, known today as Carolina Golf at Botany Woods, at 1409 Edwards Road, with nine par 3 holes played from 18 tee boxes.
The community pool on Botany Road opened alongside the neighborhood and the Botany Bolts swim team has competed in the Swim Association Invitational League since that league's founding in 1964, as one of its original member teams. The pool has six lanes, a diving board, a separate baby pool, and a picnic shelter, and membership is limited to residents.
The homes in Botany Woods
The neighborhood has more than 350 homes, and the classic one is a single story all brick ranch from the 1960s with formal living and dining rooms, hardwood floors, a wood burning fireplace, and a covered front porch. Split levels and two story traditionals fill the later streets, and lots range from about a quarter acre to more than an acre under a mature canopy of hardwoods and pines. Many homes have been renovated to open up the original floor plans, and a handful of new builds have replaced older houses on the larger lots.
There is a neighborhood association and an active social calendar, but no mandatory homeowners association fee governing the houses themselves. Pool and golf memberships are separate and optional.
Getting around from Botany Woods
Botany Woods sits on Greenville's east side off East North Street, between Howell Road and Wade Hampton Boulevard. Haywood Mall and the Haywood Road shops and restaurants are a few minutes south, Pelham Road's offices and the Patewood medical campus are close, and I-385 is reached in about ten minutes. Downtown Greenville is roughly a ten minute drive west along East North Street.
The location is why the neighborhood holds its value: it is one of the few established east side neighborhoods with large lots, a golf course, and a pool that is still a short drive from downtown. School assignments are set by address and we confirm zoning on any specific home. Ask us for comparable sales before relying on any price figure, since renovated homes here trade well above the originals.
