Wellford is a small city along US-29 in western Spartanburg County, tucked between Lyman and Spartanburg's west side. It grew up as a railroad stop, and it still keeps a quiet, unhurried feel compared to the busier corridor around it.

The town was chartered in 1882, when a settlement originally known as Wellington took its current name, and the rail line that built it still carries freight through the middle of town. There is no courthouse square here — Wellford's core is a modest stretch beside the tracks, with homes spread along the side roads from there, and the North Tyger River slips past the edge of town, pooling into a small reservoir off US-29.

Lake Cooley sits just north of town — a 330-acre reservoir with a county park on its shore that includes a boat ramp, a fishing pier, a kayak launch, and a playground, plus an outdoor education center run by Spartanburg County's parks department. Anglers work it for largemouth bass, crappie, and bream, and boats need a permit from the SJWD Water District, whose office sits right on US-29 in Wellford.
