Walhalla, South Carolina
Oconee's county seat at the foot of the Blue Ridge.
Walhalla is the county seat of Oconee County and the last real town before the road climbs into the mountains. Founded by German settlers in the 1850s, it still celebrates that heritage with a well-loved Oktoberfest each fall. Main Street keeps a classic small-town feel, with local shops and historic buildings.
For outdoor lovers, the location is the draw — Stumphouse Tunnel, Issaqueena Falls, and a long list of trails and trout streams sit just outside town. Housing tends toward in-town historic homes, rural acreage, and mountain properties. People move here for elbow room and easy access to the wild corners of the Upstate.
Known for
- Annual Oktoberfest and German heritage
- Stumphouse Tunnel and Issaqueena Falls nearby
- Gateway to Blue Ridge trails and waterfalls
Getting around
About an hour west of Greenville, and roughly 20 minutes from Seneca and Clemson.
Around Walhalla
The outdoor card keeps getting stronger. Stumphouse Park, just up the mountain from town, now includes a dedicated mountain bike park with purpose-built trails, and the Palmetto Trail's Stumphouse Passage sets off from the same trailheads. A connector path ties it all to Oconee State Park, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, where the original stone-and-timber cabins still take reservations.
SC-28 out of town climbs through Mountain Rest to the Chattooga River, the federally designated Wild and Scenic river on the Georgia line, so rafters, kayakers, and trout anglers pass through Walhalla in every season. History sits close by in the other direction: Oconee Station State Historic Site, a few miles from town off SC-11, preserves a stone blockhouse from the 1790s frontier along with a short trail to a waterfall.
