Around Seneca
Seneca exists because two rail lines crossed here: the town was laid out in 1873 at the junction of the Blue Ridge Railroad and the Atlanta and Charlotte Air Line, and it grew quickly as a market town where the area's cotton went to be sold. The name reaches further back, borrowed from a Cherokee town that once stood on the Seneca River nearby.
The textile era shaped the town as well: the Utica mill ran on the edge of Seneca for about a century, and the compact cottages of its mill village are still part of the local housing stock. On the water side, South Cove County Park sits on the southern shore of Lake Keowee minutes from downtown, with a swimming beach, boat ramps, a fishing pier, and a large campground.
