Inman, South Carolina

Inman grew up around its textile mill, and the compact downtown along Main Street still carries that history — with local restaurants and shops giving it fresh life in recent years. It sits in northern Spartanburg County, an easy hop off I-26.

Lake Bowen lies just outside town, so boating and lakeside evenings are part of everyday life for plenty of residents. Housing runs from older homes near downtown to newer subdivisions spreading through the surrounding countryside.

Around Inman

The mill at the center of town has a pedigree. Inman Mills was built in 1902 for the Chapman family to a design by W. B. Smith Whaley, one of the South's leading mill architects, and it ran for nearly a century before closing in 2001. The building joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, and the surrounding village still reads as its own neighborhood of compact frame houses on walkable streets.

Harvest Day is the date locals plan around. Started in 1981, the festival takes over downtown on the last Saturday of September with a couple hundred vendors, food, and live music, and it draws visitors from across the Upstate. Inman also has a second lake nearby that gets less attention than Bowen — Lake Cooley, off SC-292 between Inman and Lyman, a 330-acre reservoir with a county park, fishing pier, and kayak launch.
