Cowpens, South Carolina

A small town with a big story in northeastern Spartanburg County.

Cowpens is a small town in the northeastern corner of Spartanburg County, one that shares its name with the Revolutionary War battle fought nearby. Each summer the town gathers for the Mighty Moo Festival, a long-running celebration honoring the USS Cowpens and the community's ties to it.

Life here moves at a front-porch pace, with modest historic homes near the center of town and more land as you head out toward the countryside. I-85 runs close by, keeping Spartanburg's conveniences within easy reach.

  • Annual Mighty Moo Festival each summer
  • Revolutionary War heritage and namesake battle
  • Easy access to Interstate 85

Getting around

About 15 to 20 minutes to downtown Spartanburg via I-85 or Highway 29, with Greenville roughly an hour away.

Around Cowpens

The railroad explains the town's layout. Cowpens grew up along the Southern Railway's main line, incorporating in 1880, and its 1896 frame depot still stands — moved a block off the tracks in 1982, restored, and reopened as the Cowpens Depot Museum, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside are letters, photographs, and medals donated by crewmen of the Navy ships that carried the town's name.

Each January the national battlefield north of town marks the anniversary of the January 17, 1781 battle, when Daniel Morgan's Continentals and militia routed Banastre Tarleton's British column — a weekend of living-history encampments, weapons demonstrations, and ranger-led walks. The park also preserves a stretch of the Historic Green River Road, a certified segment of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, so a piece of the Revolution's actual road network sits within a short drive.
