Chesnee, South Carolina

Peach country small town near Cowpens National Battlefield.

Chesnee is a small farming town in northeastern Spartanburg County, close to the North Carolina line. This is peach country — roadside stands and family farms draw visitors all summer, and the pace of life stays unhurried year-round.

Cowpens National Battlefield, a Revolutionary War site, sits just outside town, and the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11) passes through on its way toward the mountains. Homes here lean toward acreage, farmhouses, and quiet rural roads, with Boiling Springs and Spartanburg an easy drive for bigger errands.

Getting around

Roughly 25 minutes to downtown Spartanburg straight down US-221 — the Chesnee Highway.

Around Chesnee

Chesnee is a rail town rather than a mill town, which sets it apart in Spartanburg County. The Clinchfield Railroad came through in 1909 on its way toward Rutherfordton, the town was chartered in 1911, and the street grid was drawn around the line. The name honors an ancestor of one of the founding families, a Scottish-born woman whose maiden name was Chesnee.

Water is closer than newcomers expect. Lake Blalock, a roughly 1,100-acre Spartanburg Water reservoir on the Pacolet River, spreads out a few miles south of town, and Lake Blalock Park on Sandy Ford Road gives residents a public boat ramp, fishing piers, and a nature trail. One practical note: the town's edges reach into Cherokee County, so two nearby addresses can fall under different county governments.
