Greater Greenville MLS

Piedmont, South Carolina

A historic mill community on the Saluda River, an easy drive south of Greenville.

Piedmont grew up around one of the Upstate's early textile mills, and the community still straddles the Saluda River south of Greenville. Today it's a mix of older mill-village homes, country properties, and newer neighborhoods spread across a rolling landscape.

People are drawn here for the elbow room and the easy drive — you can be in downtown Greenville quickly, but evenings feel decidedly quieter. For buyers who want a bit of land or a lower-key setting without giving up city access, Piedmont is worth a look.

Getting around

About a 20-minute drive to downtown Greenville, with I-85 access nearby.

Around Piedmont

The mill that built Piedmont was a giant for its day. Henry Hammett organized the Piedmont Manufacturing Company in 1873 at Garrison Shoals on the Saluda, opened his first factory in 1876, and added a second mill on the opposite bank in 1888. That is why the community spans two counties — the east side of the river lies in Greenville County and the west side in Anderson County, so it pays to check which side a listing sits on.

The Saluda itself keeps getting easier to enjoy. Anderson County opened Piedmont Riverfront Park in 2026 with accessible canoe and kayak launches, and the park anchors a nine-mile marked stretch of the Saluda River Blueway that begins upstream at Dolly Cooper Park. Between the new river access and the farmland along SC-86 and SC-20, outdoor space is a real part of everyday life here.
