Few towns this size can claim a statewide institution on the square.

Textiles built the modern town. Belton Cotton Mill opened in 1900 and was, within a few years, the largest cotton mill in South Carolina, while Blair Mills, founded here in 1908, helped pioneer American terry cloth production. The tidy mill-village streets they left behind are still part of the housing mix. For a day on the water, Broadway Lake sits a short drive toward Anderson, with a public park, swimming area, and boat ramp on its shore.
