The history of Owings
Owings is a historic depot community in northern Laurens County, about five miles southeast of Fountain Inn along the old rail line toward Gray Court. The Owings family settled the area in 1757, a general store was operating by 1873, and the depot opened in 1886 on land donated by Francis Rapley Owings, which is how the stop, and then the community, got its name. The rail line brought cotton out and goods in, and for decades Owings was the trading point for the farms around it.
That history is still visible: the crossroads layout, the old store buildings, and the churches date to the depot era, and the surrounding land is still largely in farms.

Downtown Fountain Inn is about ten minutes north by Highway 14 or the old Laurens Road, and I-385 is reached at Fountain Inn or at Gray Court, which puts Simpsonville at about twenty minutes and downtown Greenville at roughly thirty five. Laurens, the county seat, is about fifteen minutes south, and Clinton and Presbyterian College about twenty five.
Owings falls in Laurens County School District 55, not Greenville County; Gray Court Owings School, a combined elementary and middle school, serves the community, with high school students going to Laurens District 55 High. Assignments are set by address, and we confirm zoning on any specific home.
